Scope & Importance

Role of livestock in agriculture & industry; White Revolution; Indian & exotic breeds; distribution of cows, buffaloes, goats, sheep, poultry.

Housing systems (cattle & poultry); feeding practices; balanced ration; management of calves, bullocks, pregnant & milch animals, chicks, cockerels & layers; signs of sick animals; cattle & poultry diseases (Rinderpest, Black Quarter, FMD, Mastitis, HS, Coccidiosis, Fowl Pox, Ranikhet) – prevention & control.

Artificial Insemination

Reproductive organs; semen collection, dilution, preservation; role in cattle improvement.

Processing & marketing of milk and milk products.

Definition of fish, fisheries, aquaculture; general characteristics; types of fishes.

Unit 3: Crop Production

Introduction

Food grain production – progress since independence; sustainable & commercial agriculture; classification of crops – cereals, pulses, oilseeds, fibre, sugar, forage crops.

Soil, Fertility, Fertilizers & Manures

Soil properties (pH, texture, structure, organisms, fertility, health); nutrients – functions & deficiencies; Indian soil types; manures & fertilizers (organic, straight, complex, mixtures, biofertilizers); INM; problem soils; erosion & pollution; soil testing.

Irrigation & Drainage

Sources – rain, canals, tanks, rivers, wells, tubewells; irrigation scheduling (growth stages, intervals, soil moisture, weather); crop water needs; irrigation & drainage methods; watershed management; irrigation water quality.

Weed Control

Weed classification & characteristics; methods – cultural, mechanical, chemical, biological, integrated weed management.

Crops

Seedbed preparation; seed treatment; sowing methods; seed rate; fertilizer application; irrigation; intercultural operations; weed & pest control (bacteria, fungi, viruses, nematodes); IPM; harvesting; threshing; post-harvest (storage, processing, marketing).
