The official update about the NEST 2024 examination has been announced and admission to NISER and CEBS has started.

In this blog, we will discuss:

  • What is CEBS?
  • CEBS placements
  • Fee Structure in CEBS
  • NISER VS CEBS
  • Life in CEBS

What is CEBS?

CEBS is one of the best research colleges in India. CEBS was established as a joint initiative with the University of Mumbai and the Department of Atomic Energy and that is why it is called UM-DAE CEBS (University of Mumbai- Department of Atomic Energy Centre of Excellence in Basic Sciences).

It was primarily an experimental venture as stated by the director of CEBS and they wanted to try this idea instead of building a new campus for a particular institute.

Can they build a center for basic sciences on a university campus itself,i.e., the University of Mumbai and see if it will be successful? And, guess what? It has been very successful till now.

Another great thing about this college is that you have all the facilities of a university, not just on a particular new campus. There is a misconception that there is no campus for CEBS but there is a campus at CEBS which is the campus of the University of Mumbai.

The University of Mumbai is a very old and well-reputed university. Do you know why? Because the alumnus of that university are people like the father of our nation Mahatma Gandhi, Dada Bhai Naoroji, Dr B.R Ambedkar, Azim Premji, Sardar Vallabhai Patel, Mukesh Ambani is the alumnus of this college.

Placements:

After completing a 5 years integrated MS program at CEBS, one can directly appear for interviews at BARC, usually, for the role of a scientific officer. Students not opting for jobs can go further for a PhD.

Students for PhD and jobs were placed at Max Planck Institute, University of California (San Diego), IISc (Bengaluru), Imperial College (London), Cornell University, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Boston University, USA, etc., which are among the best of the best colleges in this world. Apart from that you can go to various job roles like civil services. You can become an instructor in prominent coaching institutes.

Fees Structure:

Just like at NISER, the fee is less than 20K but at CEBS the fee is even less than 15K.

Fees for the General/OBC category

  • Per semester - 7300
  • In a year - 14,600

Scholarship:

DISHA Scholarship

  • A scholarship of 5k per month and 20k per year for a summer internship

INSPIRE Scholarship

  • A scholarship of 5K per month for 3 years and 20,000 per year for 3 years for a summer internship.
  • 2 years of the M.Sc. phase of integrated M.Sc. granted amount is 7000 per month and 28,000 per year as a summer internship grant

To summarize, an amount of less than 15k per year is paid while an amount of almost 80K is granted.

Facilities:

Facilities for research are one of the best at this college. There are many instruments worth lakhs and crores just like at NISER. Students have the opportunity to collaborate with leading research institutes like IIT Bombay, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, HBCSE, etc.

In fact, the professors which come to CBSE are from the University of Mumbai and its partner institutions like IIT Bombay, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai and Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education.

Academics:

Similar to NISER, first-year students get all the subjects to study. In the second year, students get to choose their major subject. They can choose physics, chemistry, math and biology. Then in 3rd year, you complete courses, and in 4th year you get an in-house MSc project. In-house project means working on the project within the boundaries of campus. In 5th year one can go outside the college to do research work and project work which is not yet at NISER. Not only all across India but also the possibility of going abroad for a research project.

The good thing about this is that after your MSc is complete, you have already established your connection with professors you have worked with in that foreign university or college. This gives you the scope to work under them and pursue PhD with them and complete your further research work, you can just continue your thesis which you have been working on since your 5th year MSc

NISER vs CEBS

  • NISER has its own campus while the CEBS campus is the same as the University of Mumbai.
  • In CEBS, there is the possibility of working all across India and abroad which is not the case for NISER.
  • In NISER, all the faculties are permanent while that's not the case for CEBS. In fact, the faculties can even change per semester, they could be from IIT Bombay, TIFR, BARC, etc. This feature is really exciting as students can get the chance to learn about a particular field from different excellent scientists.

Clubs:

There are various clubs like Sports Club, Music Club, art and culture and there are various sports meets like IISM ( Inter IISER Sports Meet) and IICM ( Inter IISER Cultural Meet). Inside the campus, there is a volleyball court, badminton court which is an indoor badminton court, table tennis, and a gym and almost all the facilities are provided. The campus is located almost at the heart of Mumbai city. Hence, a lot of restaurants, tourist places, trekking sites, etc., are easily accessible.
