The Chennai Mathematical Institute is a center of excellence for mathematical science education and research. It was established in 1989 as part of the SPIC Science Foundation and has been an independent institute since 1996. CMI's mathematics and computer science research groups are among the best-known in the country. The Institute has produced an amazing number of PhD students. CMI initiated BSc and MSc programmes in Mathematics and allied areas in 1998 to bridge the gap between teaching and research in India. CMI graduates have gone on to work at some of the world's most prestigious institutions. CMI occupies a unique position in Indian academia, attracting substantial funding from both corporate and government sources.

CMI invites applications for undergraduate, postgraduate as well as PhD programmes. The courses are given as follows:

CMI offers the following 6-semester courses leading to BSc (Honours) degrees.

  • BSc (Honours) in Mathematics and Computer Science
  • BSc (Honours) in Mathematics and Physics

CMI offers the following 4-semester courses leading to MSc degrees.

  • MSc in Mathematics
  • MSc in Computer Science
  • MSc in Data Science

PhD programmes-

  • CMI currently offers PhD programmes in Mathematics, Computer Science, and Physics.
  • CMI also grants students the opportunity to pursue a part-time PhD at the Institute.
  • The Institute of Mathematical Sciences in Chennai has close relations with the institute.
  • Members of both institutes frequently collaborate to deliver seminars and courses. Students may also conduct research projects with faculty at either institute.

For this blog post, we will primarily focus on Undergraduate courses.

For UG courses:

  • A candidate must have successfully completed 10+2 years of Higher Secondary Education (or its equivalent) in order to be admitted to UG programmes.
  • In addition, there is a special case of direct admission. Students who excel in the National Olympiads in Mathematics and Physics held by HBSCE, as well as the Indian Computing Olympiad held by IARCS, are excluded from taking the BSc entrance exams.

Direct admission is typically granted to the following categories of students in Class 11 / Class 12 who have:

  • Qualified for the International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC) or
  • the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMOTC).
  • Qualified for the Orientation Cum Selection Camp (OCSC) in Physics.
  • Qualified for the International Olympiad in Informatics Training Camp (IOITC) or
  • Won a gold or silver medal at the Indian National Olympiad in Informatics (INOI) in Class 11 / Class 12 or
  • represented India at EGOI

Fees Structure:

The semester tuition fee is Rs. 1,00,000. (two semesters in a year). Hostel and mess fees are paid by students who reside in dorms at the start of each semester.

The current payment amount per semester is Rs 30,680.

  • Rs 4,000 - hostel fees,
  • Rs 22,680 - mess charges and
  • Rs 4,000 - establishment charges

Periodically, these fees are changed to reflect GST and inflation.

  • CMI is dedicated to a financial inclusion policy and works to ensure that no student is denied the chance to study in CMI because of their financial situation.
  • Based on the student's financial situation, partial and full tuition fee waivers will be accessible to assist them to achieve this aim.
  • There will be a significant number of scholarships available, each of which will cover all tuition costs and provide a monthly fellowship of Rs. 5,000.
  • Presently, about 35 scholarships are granted annually.
  • Scholarship award selection will be based on current eligibility requirements at the time of admission. Scholarships will be reviewed each semester and renewed based on satisfactory academic progress.

Exam pattern:

  • The CMI entrance examination is a pen-paper-based examination.
  • It is a 3-hour paper with English as the ONLY medium.
  • There are 16 questions for UG of both subjective and objective types.
  • The total marks for UG entrance are 100 marks.
  • The marks distribution is given as
Sections Questions Marks
Part A 10 questions 40 marks
Part B 6 questions 60 marks
Total 16 questions 100 marks

  • Students from CMI have continued their education in some of the top universities in India and abroad.
  • They include ENS-Paris, Univ Paris-Sud, and Univ Bordeaux in France, Berkeley, Caltech, Chicago, Cornell, Harvard, MIT, Penn, Princeton, Stanford, and Yale in the United States, the IITs, IISc, IMSc, ISI, and TIFR in India, as well as the Max Planck Institutes and Humboldt University in Germany.
  • CMI graduates have also progressed into fields including financial mathematics, management, and economics, although the bulk of students from the Institute continues in Mathematics, Computer Science, and Physics.
  • A wide range of industries, including software development, semiconductors, investment banking, analytics, and healthcare, highly value CMI graduates.
  • A number of CMI alumni have also established companies both in India and overseas. Bank of America, Adobe, TCS, Accenture, etc, are some of the top recruiters.
