The National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) is the only institution in Bhubaneswar that is dedicated to motivating students to spread and talk about science and research. The general neighborhood contains the campuses of AIIMS and IIT Bhubaneswar. Apart from the IITs and AIIMS, NISER has taken a stand to help grow in this field, where generations go beyond medicine and engineering.
Hence, this blog has all the details about NISER, their policies and perspective, the degree program, the fee structure, and the final aim of Sciastra towards society.
Stay tuned!
There are three categories that are used to group NISER’s activities:
1. The education system
The education system has a very nice ration of students and faculties to maintain a balance. Therefore, the courses and degrees available are highly diverse and help students adapt to the system. NISER have degrees for students in both undergraduate and graduate programs.
After completing their 10+2 higher secondary education, students can enroll in an integrated 5-year MSc. degree in the major and growing field of science. Hence, after this you can either go for a PhD or work in any R&D department of the desired company.
- A combined MSc. and Ph.D. program
- Ph.D. program
In order to prepare students for a career in scientific research in academic institutions, national and international research & development labs, industries, etc., NISER’s main objective is to provide an extraordinary culture that promotes an innovative environment.
2. Research focus:
NISER promotes research both theoretically and experimentally. Hence, there are currently seven distinct schools within NISER, each focusing on a different branch of science. The following are the branches: chemistry, biology, physics, earth and planetary sciences, humanities & social sciences.
3. Science Outreach & Policy:
NISER helps in growing a skilled and inspiring researcher to grow in career and in further future. Not only does it actively engage in the dissemination of scientific knowledge to the general public and school children, but it also works towards fulfilling a responsibility towards future generations.
The institute’s faculty members also serve on a number of governmental committees that create national science policies.
The Perspective
NISER fosters a scientific culture that enables each member to succeed in whatever field they choose. NISER acknowledges that contemporary scientific research is conducted in an unbounded field. Therefore, this means fostering a new scientific culture in which our community’s members achieve an intellectual agility free from the constraints of outdated disciplinary conventions.
The surrounding culture of NISER is favorable for the students to think and go beyond the box. According to this viewpoint, while teaching the foundational courses of their respective schools, faculty members from various institutions attempt to create centers of research in interdisciplinary fields.
Hence, A computer center with high-performance computing resources and a wireless network throughout the campus, a modern library with a large collection of books and journals, a large reading area, and electronic tools to access a variety of sources, a gymnasium, a meditation center, and modern laboratories to develop skills in conducting experiments, innovating, fabricating, and conceiving new experimental techniques are just a few examples.
In conclusion, NISER is a comprehensive system for learning and exploring new areas.
Five-year integrated MSc program
- Research and teaching are equally important to NISER. Strongly motivated, intelligent young people will be inspired to devote their lives to scientific research by the faculty’s research and teaching abilities.
- Students after their class 12th can appear for NEST. NISER offers a 5-year integrated MSc program in basic sciences (or equivalent). The program is known as the MSc in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics.
- For the starting two semesters, the curriculum is only for everyone. In the third semester, students can choose their choice of specialization.
Each school’s maximum seating capacity is as follows:
- Biological Sciences School: 55
- Chemical Sciences School: 55
- Mathematical Sciences School: 55
- Physical Science School: 55
Procedure and School Allocation Criteria:
Students are asked to select three schools after successfully finishing all first-year courses. There is only one way via which students can choose their school.
(i) The student’s preference (ii) The two semesters’ combined CGPA
The institute allocates seats based on CGPA if more students wish to enroll in a school than the available seats. In case of a tie, it awards the seat to the student who performed better in that specific subject during the first two semesters.
The FEE structure of NISER:
SciAstra:
Sciastra is a community of people who work towards building a society. A growing movement driven by enthusiastic students and alumni from India’s leading research institutes. It includes IISc, IISERs, NISER, and others. SciAstra is more than just an educational platform.
Sciastra is a learning platform that has aided students in 11th and 12th grade and helped them prepare for stepping into IISERs, NISER, IISc, and various famous research institutes.
Students can change it according to their needs or comfort. The mentors are role models who have passed the same competitive exams and are currently conducting research in math, physics, chemistry, and biology. Therefore, they are more than just teachers. Sciastra has provided everything, to their students, like study materials to doubt-solving to live classes and mentorship sessions.
The community at SciAstra is what really makes it unique. Not only does SciAstra have resources that include lecture videos, solved problems, and doubt sessions. But they too have mock tests that have questions that mimic the exact question pattern in the main exam. Therefore, the alumni have hundreds of success stories and motivation to share.
Hence, SciAstra (Play Store) encourages curiosity in addition to academics. Learning becomes engaging and relatable thanks to their imaginative videos, engaging webinars, and “science behind stories” methodology. Therefore, it’s about falling in love with science, not just about getting into college.
