The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore is the name of excellence in Indian higher education. Students getting their admission to the various programs via various entrances is more than just an establishment. IISc is a major force in scientific research and technological advancement on a global scale.

It opens up a world of seemingly endless possibilities for all the students who are interested in science. However, admission to this prestigious university is difficult and requires more than just academic success.

It necessitates a well-defined plan, careful planning, and a thorough comprehension of its distinct admissions procedures. This blog will guide you through all the needs that a student requires to get admission.

Stay tuned.

Recognizing the Environment: IISc Programs

  1. Programs for Undergraduates (UG): For students immediately following Class 12.
  2. Master’s degrees in technology, design, and management are examples of postgraduate (PG) course-based programs.
  3. Research-Oriented Programs: Direct Ph.D. and integrated Ph.D. programs for individuals who are dedicated to a research career.

The Undergraduate Gateway: Your Post-Class 12 Entry Point

IISc provides two highly sought-after undergraduate degrees for aspiring scientists and engineers just out of school.

  • Mathematics and Computing Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech)

This engineering degree is not your typical one. For students who have a strong interest in mathematics and its applications in computing, electronics, and communication, IISc offers a distinctive, research-driven B.Tech program.

Eligibility: Physics, chemistry, and mathematics (PCM) must have been completed as required subjects in Class 12 (or its equivalent). Students need to score at least 75% overall (65% for SC/ST/PwD).

The Selection Process’s Golden Ticket: Your score on the JEE Advanced 2026 exam is the only factor used to determine admission. A high ranking is necessary.

2. Bachelor of Science (B.S. Research) program, four years

Students who want to pursue a BS program should have a strong focus on practical research from the start; it provides flexibility to specialize in major subjects like Earth & Environmental Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or Mathematics.

Eligibility: PCM must have been your primary subject in Class 12 (or its equivalent).

A first-class grade or 60% of the possible points must be earned; for SC/ST candidates, a pass is adequate.

The Selection Process’s Golden Ticket: The IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) 2026 is how you will be admitted to this program.

Taking the Next Step: IISc Postgraduate Programs

IISc provides a top-notch suite of master’s programs for graduates wishing to specialize and expand their knowledge.

1. Technology Master’s degree (M.Tech)

This course offers you expertise in specialized engineering and technology fields that include computer science, chemical engineering, aerospace, and sustainable technologies through IISc’s M.Tech programs.

Qualifications: It is necessary to have an M.Sc. in a related science or a bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering or technology field.

The Selection Process’s Golden Ticket: It is required to have a valid GATE 2024, 2025, or 2026 score. The selection procedure is different:

The majority of disciplines: Your GATE score is given 100% weight.

A combination of 30% interview performance and 70% GATE score is used in some disciplines.

The three-part process in the fiercely competitive field of computational and data sciences consists of a 70% GATE score and 30% combined weighting for an interview and written exam.

2. Product Design & Management Master of Design (M.Des)

This program combines engineering and creativity. This course offers students not only science but also the art of designing, developing, and manufacturing products. A B.E., B.Tech, B.Des (4 years), or B.Arch (5 years) degree is required for eligibility.

The Golden Ticket (Selection Process): A valid GATE, CAT, or CEED score is required. Your test score will account for 70% of the final selection, while your performance in the design aptitude test and interview will account for 30%.

3. Master of Management (M.Mgt.)

This program offers students a background in business analytics. It is especially designed for engineering and science graduates who want to transition into the business world.

A B.E.,  B.Tech, or a B.Arch degree is required as an eligibility.

The selection process is based on your GATE or CAT results. In the next step, you will be admitted after a group discussion and in-person interview.

4. Master of Science (M.Sc.)

M.Sc. programs in core science subjects are available for two years at IISc.

Selection & Disciplines: Life Sciences: Needs a bachelor’s degree in the relevant field. Your JAM 2026 or GATE score will determine your selection, and you will then have an interview.

Chemical Sciences: Requires 10+2 math and a B.Sc. with chemistry as a major. Your 100% JAM 2026 (Chemistry-CY) score is the only factor used to make the selection.

Doctoral and Integrated Programs: The Highest Level of Research

The doctoral programs offered by IISc are the best option for individuals who are determined to pursue a career in research.

  • Integrated Ph.D. Programs: This allows B.Sc. graduates to easily transfer straight into a Ph.D. program, earning a master’s degree in the process. The JAM entrance is the route for getting admission.
  • Ph.D./M.Tech (Research) Programs: Students who have successfully completed their MSc. and then opt a PhD have to clear GATE or a national-level fellowship (CSIR-NET or JRF). This also requires an admission and an interview after selection.

There are professionals in R&D labs who along with pursuing a PhD, prefer working in industries. Therefore, the ERP (external registration program) offers a PhD/MTech option for research.

The Application Blueprint: Your Course of Action

1. The tentative entrance dates are for 2026.

  • The application for PG/Ph.D. starts early February & ends late March 2026. For UG (B.Tech/B.S.) applications, start in early may and end in early June 2026.
