About IAT
The IISER Aptitude Test is a CBT that offers admission into IISERs, IISc, and IITs. There will be 60 questions in the IAT, with 15 questions from each of the following subjects: physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics.
The test will last 180 minutes in total. There will be multiple-choice questions. There will only be one right response for each question.
- +4 for the correct answer.
- -1 for the wrong answer.
- Zero to the unattempted questions.
- The total IAT score is 240 marks.
When creating the rank list, a candidate’s total score out of 240 will be taken into account.
Not every applicant who shows up for IAT 2025 will receive a rank. Furthermore, achieving a rank does not ensure that you will be accepted into an IISER.
IAT for Different Institutions
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, is offering a Bachelor of Science (BS) research program via the IISER Aptitude Test exam.
The IIT Madras (IITM) is giving admission to the Bachelor of Science program in medical sciences & engineering. This is the only time in history when a student can take admission to IIT without appearing for the JEE entrance.
Students must finish both of the steps listed below in order to apply to any of the aforementioned programs (IISc, IITM).
- The initial step is to visit the IISER admission portal (www.iiseradmission.in) to apply for the IISER Aptitude Test 2025.
- Then the student needs to complete the IISc and IITM admission portal application form, if appropriate.
Put differently, students who want to apply for the aforementioned programs MUST DO SO SEPARATELY for both IAT 2025 and the program in question.

About JEE:
To all the aspirants who are interested in pursuing engineering or architecture, clearing JEE is the first step. Therefore, this entrance is conducted by NTA, and qualifying for it will make the students eligible for JEE Advance. Without using technical terms, let’s examine what’s new and significant this year.
Three different papers are available for JEE Main 2025:
- The most well-liked paper, Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech), is entirely computer-based (CBT) in nature.
- Paper 2A (B.Arch.): For drawing students, it’s pen and paper, and for the MCQs, it’s online-based.
- Paper 2B (B.Planning): Completely CBT, including MCQs based on planning, aptitude, and mathematics.
- You will still draw on A4 sheets for the B.Arch drawing test.
Exam Schedule: What to Expect in the Hall
First Paper: B.E./B.Tech
- Subjects included are mathematics, chemistry, and physics.
- Exam type: MCQs and numerical values.
- The total number of questions is 90 (students have the choice to attempt any 75 questions out of it).
- Score: 300
Paper 2A: B.Arch
- Section I: Mathematics (MCQ + Numerical)
- Aptitude Test (MCQs) in Part II
- Section III: Offline Drawing
- Marks total: 400
Paper 2B: B. Planning
- Section I: Mathematics (MCQ + Numerical)
- Aptitude Test (MCQs) in Part II
- Section III: Questions Based on Planning (MCQs)
- Marks total: 400
Marking System: Achieve a Smart Score
- Regarding MCQs:
Accurate: +4
False: -1
⏭ No response
- Regarding Questions of Numerical Value:
Accurate: +4
False: -1
⏭ No response
- The drawing test will have two questions and be scored out of 100.
The test’s duration
- Paper Length (Non-PwD) Length (PwD with scribe)
- Paper 1: 3–4 hours
- Papers 2A and 2B Three or four hours
- Papers 2A and 2B, if both are selected Three and a half hours and four hours and ten minutes
Merit and breaking ties
Here’s how they break a tie when two students have the same score:
A higher math score
Next, physics.
Then, chemistry
Next, the proportion of right to wrong responses
IAT or JEE. Which one is easier?
While it depends on which exam is better for you rather than which is tougher. Have a broad perspective about it; learn as much as possible.
Goals and Priorities
IAT focuses on science. It is intended for students who want to study pure sciences at IISERs, IISc, or IIT Madras (for research), such as physics, chemistry, biology, or math. IAT is the way to go if you have an interest in academic science, research, and discovery.
JEE is especially for those students who want to get into IITs, IIITs, and NITs for engineering. For students who want to pursue a career in architecture/engineering, JEE is a must.
Level of exam
The syllabus for JEE is much more elaborate, particularly in math and physics. Multiple steps and strong problem-solving skills under pressure are frequently needed to answer questions.
IAT includes math, biology, chemistry, and physics, all of which are equally important. IAT may therefore be more balanced and even enjoyable for you if you enjoy biology and are not just interested in solving problems that require a lot of math.
Exam Pattern and Stress
The IAT, students have to solve 60 questions within 3 hours, while the JEE Main consists of 90 questions (75 attempts) in 180 minutes, it means that each question is harder and takes less time.
Additionally, JEE takes place over multiple sessions, & ranks are determined by the percentile scores.
The Mindset Is Important
IAT is appropriate for an inquisitive, research-focused mindset. Hence, it rewards conceptual clarity and comprehension.
JEE requires strategy, accuracy, and speed. Every mark matters in this race, and there is a lot of time pressure.
About the Platform
SciAstra is a well-known platform. With the emergence of need and potential, SciAstra’s hold on research is revolutionary. Hence, institutes like IISER, NISER, and CMI hold a position apart from IITs.
