Eligibility Criteria:
To be eligible for NEST 2024, candidates must fulfill specific criteria.
- Candidates must have passed the class XII examination from any recognised Board in India in the years 2022 or 2023 or should be appearing for the same in 2024
- There is no age limit for appearing in the NEST 2024 examination and admission to either NISER or UM-DAE CEBS.
- Students appearing for their 12th board exams in 2024, including first and second droppers, are eligible.
- The minimum percentage required in the class 12 board exams is 55% for SC, ST, or PWD candidates and 60% for all other categories.
Exam Pattern:
- The question paper has 4 sections: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics.
- Each section is worth 60 marks and contains 20 MCQs.
- Correct answers get 3 marks, incorrect answers lead to a deduction of 1 mark, and no marks are deducted for unanswered questions.
- Candidates should attempt all sections for the best chance of success.
- The best three-section scores out of the four will be used to prepare the merit list.
- The total score considered for the merit list is out of 180 marks.
- The question paper will be available in both Hindi and English, with the English version considered the standard in case of any language-related confusion or discrepancy.
Syllabus:
The NEST 2024 syllabus is based on the class 11 and class 12 NCERT curricula, encompassing physics, chemistry, maths, and biology.
It is essential to note that recent changes in NCERT are not included, and candidates can refer to the previous syllabus for their preparation.

Section-wise Cutoff Marks:
NEST 2024 has two types of cutoff marks –
- Section-wise cutoff marks (SMAS): SMAS varies for different categories and subjects. For example, in 2023, the cutoff for bio in the general category was 5.6, chemistry was 5.2, maths was 4.9, and physics was 4.8. And,
- overall cutoff marks (MAP): MAP ranges from 60 to 90 percentile for different categories.
